While driving, you’re noticing your car may shift differently than normal.
You’re driving down the road and notice your car shifting differently than normal. You are not sure if this is a sign of transmission issues, but it’s a good idea to check it out anyway.
If you think your transmission is slipping, here are some things that you should do:
- If you drive an automatic, try shifting into neutral and see if the problem goes away or gets worse. If it gets worse, then something is wrong with either your engine or transmission (or both).
- Take it into an auto shop for inspection as soon as possible so they can determine whether or not there’s anything wrong with your car’s gearbox.
When you’re stopped at a light or stop sign and put it in reverse, the car doesn’t go very far.

When you start up your car and get in, do you smell burnt oil or transmission fluid? If so, this could be an indication that something is wrong with your transmission.
You may also notice a burning rubber odor coming from under the hood of your vehicle. This is another sign that something is wrong with your transmission–the smell comes from friction materials inside of it wearing down.
You hear a grinding noise when you put your car in drive or reverse.
If you hear a grinding noise when your car is in drive or reverse, it’s time to get the transmission checked. If there’s no grinding sound, that could mean that your car needs new parts (or a complete overhaul).
