Signs my Transmission is Slipping

Do you smell burnt oil or transmission fluid when you start your car? Does it feel like it’s getting harder to shift gears? Or maybe your car isn’t going very far in reverse. These are all signs that your transmission may be slipping and needs repairs. At Durham Transmission, our trained technicians will assess the situation to determine if your car’s transmission is slipping and what kind of repairs you need. We’ve been doing this for years so trust us when we say that we can help!

While driving, you’re noticing your car may shift differently than normal.

You’re driving down the road and notice your car shifting differently than normal. You are not sure if this is a sign of transmission issues, but it’s a good idea to check it out anyway.

If you think your transmission is slipping, here are some things that you should do:

  • If you drive an automatic, try shifting into neutral and see if the problem goes away or gets worse. If it gets worse, then something is wrong with either your engine or transmission (or both).
  • Take it into an auto shop for inspection as soon as possible so they can determine whether or not there’s anything wrong with your car’s gearbox.

When you’re stopped at a light or stop sign and put it in reverse, the car doesn’t go very far.

  • When you’re stopped at a light or stop sign and put it in reverse, the car doesn’t go very far.
  • This is a sign that your transmission is slipping. A bad torque converter can cause this as well as worn out brakes, so check your brake pads and rotors to see if they need replacing.

You smell burnt oil or transmission fluid when you start your car.

When you start up your car and get in, do you smell burnt oil or transmission fluid? If so, this could be an indication that something is wrong with your transmission.

You may also notice a burning rubber odor coming from under the hood of your vehicle. This is another sign that something is wrong with your transmission–the smell comes from friction materials inside of it wearing down.

You hear a grinding noise when you put your car in drive or reverse.

If you hear a grinding noise when your car is in drive or reverse, it’s time to get the transmission checked. If there’s no grinding sound, that could mean that your car needs new parts (or a complete overhaul).

If you notice any of these signs and symptoms of transmission slipping, don’t hesitate to bring your vehicle into a mechanic right away:
